About Cardiff Flying Start Health Services

The Flying Start Health Service aims to support you with parenting and to provide you with any help and advice which you might need, from the ante natal period through to 3 years and 11 months.

Help and support can be provided on a range of issues which may affect you and your family. These include caring for your new baby, feeding, weaning, sleep routines, potty training and behaviour issues. We can also sign post you or refer you to other agencies within and outside Flying Start if required.

Cardiff Flying Start Health Services

Health Visiting Service

Health Visitors are all registered nurses/midwives with several years hospital experience who have completed a one year specialist community public health nurse course. They also have Flying Start specific training in baby massage, neonatal assessment and childhood developmental assessment.

The Health Visiting service in Flying Start is able to provide additional home visits from the ante natal period through to 3 years and 11 months. This is to support you with parenting and to provide you with any help and advice which you might need. We can also sign post you or refer you to other agencies within and outside Flying Start if required.

Community Nursery Nurse Service

The Community Nursery Nurse Service work alongside the Health Visiting Service to provide bespoke advice and support for you and your family. A team of trained nursery nurses or equivalent, the team can provide advice and support can be provided on a range of issues which may affect you and your family. These include:

  • Caring for your new baby
  • Feeding
  • Weaning
  • Sleep routines
  • Potty training
  • Behaviour issues

Speech and Language Therapy Service

In Flying Start areas children who might be having speech and/or language difficulties are identified as soon as possible in order that the team can provide the most appropriate support as early as possible.

The Cardiff Flying Start Speech and Language Therapy team can work with you and your child to provide bespoke, specific and practical strategies to develop children’s language and communication skills.

The Speech and Language Therapy team work to ensure that all Flying Start teams, including our Parenting and Childcare Services, are able to identify and support children’s speech, language and communication needs.

Food and Nutrition Team 

Our team of dietitians and dietetic support workers support families and children to access a healthy, affordable, nutritious diet to benefit their health and wellbeing. Services provided by the team include practical  

cooking sessions and accredited healthy eating and cooking skills courses for families. 

 The Food and Nutrition team ensure families receive consistent, accurate information and practical support around food and nutrition. Providing food and nutrition training for early years professionals, such as registered childcare workers, health visitors and community nursery nurses. They also provide healthy eating, complementary feeding and faddy eating information resources 

 The team support Flying Start early years settings in achieving the Gold Standard Healthy Snack Award (GSHSA) and the Healthy and Sustainable Pre-School Scheme, enabling children to access healthy food and drink options in a healthy environment that supports children’s health and wellbeing.
